The work of a sculptor is always about strength and fragility at the same time. In the process of working on a ceramic sculpture, the artist applies great physical force at different stages: to knead the clay mass, remove the fired object from the oven, etc. However, dried and fired clay itself is quite fragile and may not withstand careless movement and falling, and is generally unpredictable in work. All this requires great fortitude from the sculptor, which means perseverance and courage.
Natalya Stepanyuk’s strength as an artist is not only in her ability to face her fears, not to be afraid of mistakes and defeats in the struggle with the material, but also in her readiness to experiment. In one work she can combine different types of clay, metal and clay, natural objects like a piece of wood or stone and clay.
In the combination of different and even opposing materials in one object, the idea of balance, close to the artist, is realized.
Natalya transfers some of the objects originally created from clay to metal, preserving the external fragility of a ceramic product and at the same time introducing the softness and heaviness of metal.
The objects presented at the exhibition correspond to the idea of combining opposites and their harmonious coexistence. They belong to the series “Wings”, “Spheres of Influence”, “Improvisations”, “Episodes”, “Tender Stones”, “Botanicus” and “Flow”.
