Fragments of Memories

Natalya Stepanyuk is a sculptor-philosopher. She is characterized by extensive metaphorism, which is manifested in the way she works with volume and plane, and in the shaping of the material, and especially in the way the sculptor uses color. Most often, she uses local, contrasting, almost heraldic colors: scarlet, blue, black, metallic, gold, or muted tones taken from nature itself, ocher, coffee, sand, olive. The word-symbol - the name of the works and series - is a necessary part of the work, it is always not accidental, it is precisely chosen. Stepanyuk’s main method – “assembling” fragments into a single whole – is manifested not only when creating a single object, but also in the fact that the artist tends to think in cycles and series.

The relationship between the Multiple and the One, thus, becomes one of the main philosophical antinomies embodied in the material, along with dynamism and balance, beginning and completion, openness to infinity and strictness of boundaries, flourishing and fading.

This is, in Natalya Stepanyuk’s view, a visible metaphor of memory, an appeal to the past in the present, making it possible to preserve – aka embodiment – images imprinted by consciousness for the future and in the future.
